Gisterochtend. De herdenkingsdienst ter ere van Nelson Mandela: voor velen is het hoogtepunt van deze Mandela Memorial  de toespraak van de president van de Verenigde Staten, Barack Obama. Een dieptepunt is er ook: de doventolk blijkt geen echte doventolk, hij doet maar wat. Voor mij persoonlijk is het hoogtepunt het gebed van imam Ebrahim Bham (Twitter: @EbrahimBham) dat als een onderdeel van de zgn. interfaith prayers  wordt uitgesproken.

Geëmotioneerd als ik ben om het heengaan van Nelson Mandela, stem ik af op de livestream  van een Zuid-Afrikaanse 24/7 nieuwszender. In mijn tijd als actievoerder (globaal genomen was dat de tweede helft van de jaren tachtig) was Nelson Mandela een household name, op een blauwe maandag was ik zelfs vrijwilliger bij het Komitee Zuidelijk Afrika (samen met anderen het knipselarchief bijgehouden). Zo'n Mandela Memorial doet terugdenken! Het is dan fijn  wanneer een religieuze tekst, die mij inmiddels eigen is geworden, die nu hélemaal in mijn systeem zit, een plaats heeft tijdens het Memorial. Mash'Allah!

Dezelfde avond nog wordt de complete tekst van het gebed door de JHB Muslim School op Twitter gezet. Alhamdulillah, op deze Twitlonger webpagina staat de complete tekst van het gebed. Voor jouw gemak heb ik deze tekst gekopieerd en geplaatst onderaan de weblogbijdrage die je nu leest, onder de video van het gebed. NB: het was nodig her en der de tekst aan te passen, zodat deze overeenkomt met de door de imam uitgesproken tekst. Bismillah:

I begin with the opening chapters of the Holy Qur’an:

Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen:
All praise is due to the Almighty, Lord of the Worlds, Who is Unequalled and Unmatched in every one of His Attributes
Ar Rahmani-r-Rahim:
The Beneficent, the Merciful
Maliki Yawmi-d-Deen:
The Master of the Day of Judgment
Iyyakanabudu wa iyyakanastaeen:
O Almighty Lord! You Alone do we worship, You Alone do we seek assistance from.

We extend our condolence to the Mandela family and to the nation during this time of sadness of the passing away of Madiba, a global icon of freedom in recent times.

We place on record our indebtedness to Madiba for his selfless efforts, in selfishing - in sàlvaging the nation and leading it to the path of peace, reconciliation and harmony, and laying the foundation of a free and prosperous South Africa.

O Almighty Allah! O Our Lord! Our Supreme Lord!

We beseech You that future leaders of this great country, and leaders of the entire world, and people of this country, and people of the world, would stand up for the ideals and vision our Madiba strove for.

As Madiba never lost an opportunity to reconcile people, we pray to You, O Almighty Lord, let us strive towards peace, harmony, reconciliation, on the basis of human dignity.

As he made everyone feel important whenever he met them, we ask of You, O Almighty Lord, let us acknowledge each other in our places of work, and our places of residence.

As he stood up to injustice and illegal wars, let us do likewise, even if it is waged by the powerful.

As he stood up for the oppressed people of the world, we pray to You, O Almighty Allah, to help us sustain that resolve and realise, we preserve our freedom by helping others towards freedom.

As he was kind and merciful, and as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
Ir rahamu min fi-l-ardh Ya arhamukum min fi-s-samaa
Have mercy and kindness to people in this world, the Almighty will show kindness towards you.

We ask of You, O Almighty, to plant in the hearts of every human being, the seed of kindness.

And as Madiba lived an example showing us the spirit of self-sacrifice, we ask of You, O Almighty Lord, grant us the grace of resisting corruption and temptation.

And finally, on this prayer we ask: O Almighty Allah! Let us dedicate ourselve to the good ideals he strove to in his life.
